The Ibercaja Foundation has launched the XXXIII edition of the International Organ Cycle «Joseph de Sesma,» an event that stands out for its dedication to ancient music and will be held in the emblematic Patio de la Infanta during the month of March. This cycle, coinciding with Classical Music Day on March 20, offers a series of four concerts directed by the renowned organist José Luis González Uriol.
The Baroque Organ of 1692: A Restored Treasure
The undisputed star of this cycle is the Baroque organ built in 1692 by the master organ maker José de Sesma for the Parish Church of Sabiñán. This instrument, which had fallen into neglect, was acquired by the Ibercaja Foundation in 1990 in a state of ruin. Thanks to a careful restoration carried out by De L’Om Arrizabalaga, the organ regained its original splendor and sounded again in 1992, exactly three centuries after its creation. Since then, it has been the focal point of numerous concerts of ancient music.
Concert Program: A Journey through Ancient Music
The cycle begins on March 6 with the Italian organist Luca Scandali, who will perform a repertoire spanning from the 15th to the 17th centuries, including works by Frescobaldi, William Byrd, and Francisco Correa de Arauxo. On March 13, the ensemble «Los Músicos de su Alteza,» led by Luis Antonio González and soprano Olalla Alemán, will interpret pieces from the Spanish musical heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries.
On March 20, Olimpio Medori, organist and harpsichordist, will present a historically informed interpretation of works by Frescobaldi and Juan Cabanilles. Finally, the cycle will conclude on March 27 with the group Ministriles de Marsias, who will use period instruments to perform compositions by Händel, Sweelinck, and other Baroque masters.
Commitment to Culture and Heritage
This cycle not only aims to bring classical music closer to the public but also to preserve the rich artistic and historical heritage of Aragón. The Ibercaja Foundation, through this initiative, combines history, music, and heritage, offering a unique cultural experience in a historical setting such as the Patio de la Infanta. This commitment to culture and musical education reinforces the Foundation’s role as a pillar in the promotion of the arts in the region.
