Litera Meat was the only company from Spain’s pork sector invited to the reception marking the 77th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, held in Madrid by the Chinese Embassy in Spain. The event brought together issues critical to exports, employment and trade relations between the two countries.
Litera Meat discusses challenges facing Spain’s pork sector with China
The company, based in Binéfar, Huesca, was represented by Carlos Gaspar Pontítero, its director of Quality, Food Safety and Environment, who was directly invited by China’s ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing. The reception brought together institutional, diplomatic, business, academic and cultural representatives.
During the event, Carlos Gaspar exchanged views with Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Luis Planas on issues affecting Litera Meat and Spain’s pork sector as a whole in its relationship with China. These included the Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s anti-dumping investigation into pork imports from the European Union and the situation surrounding the African swine fever outbreak.
Litera Meat highlighted its cooperation and transparency in the anti-dumping process, the outcome of which places it among the Spanish companies subject to the lowest applicable tariffs. The discussion also covered the impact of African swine fever on the value chain and exports to China and other international markets.
Hiring Chinese workers joins Litera Meat’s agenda
The recruitment of Chinese personnel was another issue discussed in Madrid. Litera Meat has added more than 170 workers of Chinese origin through an overseas recruitment channel that remains open.
The company expects to hire approximately 50 additional workers from China in the near future. This recruitment avenue was discussed against a backdrop of growing economic and trade ties between Spain and China, particularly significant for the agri-food sector.
In his remarks, Yao Jing highlighted the strong state of bilateral relations and the desire to deepen ties between the two countries. Luis Planas, meanwhile, underscored the scale of trade flows and Spain’s role in European pork exports to the Chinese market.
Litera Meat exceeds €924 million in revenue in 2025
Litera Meat is the sixth plant developed by Grupo Pini, a European meat group founded in 1982 that specializes in pork slaughtering and processing. The Binéfar facility serves domestic and international markets and exports to more than 70 countries.
The company bases its model on efficiency, innovation and sustainability, with state-of-the-art facilities, renewable energy use, and a commitment to quality, animal welfare and stable employment. In 2025, it generated more than €924 million in revenue, making it the company with the highest revenue in the province of Huesca.
Litera Meat’s presence at the Chinese Embassy reception strengthens its position in a strategic market for Spain’s pork sector and within the framework of economic relations between Spain and China.
