Nuévalos to Transform Its Silo into a Tourist Lighthouse by 2026

The historic grain silo of Nuévalos will be transformed into an innovative tourist center by 2026, under the name «Tourist Lighthouse.» This project, part of the Tourist Sustainability Plan in Destination (PSTD) of the Calatayud Community Region, aims to revitalize the space with modern infrastructures and views of the La Tranquera reservoir, making it a benchmark for tourism in the region.

Transformation of the Silo: Spaces and Functions

The project includes a complete renovation of the old silo, which will feature a regional tourist office on its ground floor, covering an area of 330 square meters. This space will provide public service facilities, restrooms, and offices. Additionally, an audiovisual room equipped with videomapping will be installed, allowing visitors to explore the heritage and landscapes of the 67 municipalities in the region.

On the first floor, visitors will be able to enjoy a panoramic terrace located 20 meters high, offering stunning views of the reservoir. The original machinery of the silo will also be preserved and displayed as part of the industrial history of the region.

Project Details and Funding

The bidding process for the execution of the project is open until February 6, with a maximum budget of 194,810 euros and an execution period of six months. The architectural design is led by Juan Carlos Martínez, who has incorporated energy efficiency improvements into the proposal.

The «Tourist Lighthouse» is one of 26 initiatives within the PSTD, financed by the NextGenerationEU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain. The total investment in the region amounts to 2.8 million euros, aiming to promote sustainability, digital transformation, competitiveness, and territorial cohesion.

Impact and Strategic Objectives

This project seeks to position Nuévalos as a tourist reference point, leveraging its strategic location as the gateway to the Monasterio de Piedra, the main attraction in the area. It is expected to attract approximately 300,000 annual visitors to this monument, promoting a more sustainable and innovative form of tourism.

In addition to attracting visitors, the project aims to create jobs and counteract depopulation in the region, developing a model of tourism that is not only attractive but also beneficial for the local community.
