The districts of Comunidad de Teruel and Maestrazgo have inaugurated the tourist route Camino de los Pilones–Faros del Páramo, a journey of more than 90 kilometers that revitalizes ancient historical paths marked by stone pillars. This project, funded with nearly 190,000 euros from the Teruel Investment Fund (FITE), was presented by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Manuel Blasco, alongside the presidents of both districts.
A journey through the history and landscape of Teruel
The route, classified as GR 265, revives an ancient pack path that for centuries served as a communication route between Aragon and the Levant. The stone pillars, over two meters tall, guide travelers through landscapes of plateaus, juniper groves, and medium mountain ranges, evoking transhumance and medieval trade. This itinerary not only offers a hiking experience but also a journey into the cultural past of the region.
The route is structured in several sections, connecting municipalities of the Teruel plateau: from Teruel to Corbalán (15 km), Corbalán to El Pobo (19 km), El Pobo to Allepuz (14 km), Allepuz to Villarroya de los Pinares via the Camino de Jaime I (7 km), Villarroya de los Pinares to Fortanete (16.5 km), and from Fortanete to La Iglesuela del Cid (21.5 km). Additionally, it is complemented by the Piedra Seca route, which is 3 km long.
Services for hikers
The Camino de los Pilones offers a service infrastructure designed for hikers. It features an official website and a network of collaborating establishments that facilitate travel logistics. Additionally, a hiker’s passport has been implemented, allowing users to stamp their passage through different municipalities, thereby encouraging the complete route.
Investment and development
The funding for the project has been made possible through the joint investment of the districts. The Community of Teruel has contributed 65,000 euros from the FITE 2023, while the Maestrazgo district has allocated 100,000 euros from the FITE 2021 and 24,000 euros from the FITE 2023. This initiative aims not only to promote sustainable tourism but also to stimulate the local economy through the enhancement of the cultural and natural heritage of the region.
