Scientific employment in Spain has reached record numbers, with over 414,000 workers in the sector, according to the latest report from Randstad Research. This sustained growth reflects a significant expansion and a transformation in the country’s labor structure.
In the third quarter of 2025, the number of workers in the scientific sector reached 414,000, representing an increase of 3.9% during that period. Compared to four years ago, when there were just over 316,000 employees, the sector has grown by 31%, thus achieving historic highs.
Scientific employment is divided into five main branches, with Technicians in the physical, chemical, environmental sciences, and engineering being the most numerous, totaling 161,000 professionals. However, the sector remains predominantly male, with 65% being men, although among the group of Science Professionals, women represent 51%.
The geographical distribution of scientific employment is primarily concentrated in Catalonia and Madrid, which together account for more than 38% of the total. Valentín Bote, director of Randstad Research, highlights that «scientific employment is becoming increasingly dynamic and competitive,» emphasizing the importance of fostering scientific vocations among young people to maintain this positive trend.
