Success of the 2025 Summer Archaeological Digs in Teruel

The Teruel Provincial Council allocated 30,000 euros for excavations carried out in Alto Chacón, Cabezo de San Pedro in Oliete, and La Caridad in Caminreal. The research has provided comprehensive information about the domestic life of these sites, with the participation of around twenty intern students.

Highlighted Results of the Excavations

Cabezo de San Pedro: Fully Excavated Ceramics Oven

In Oliete, the excavation of a ceramic oven built with Iberian technique, measuring 8 meters in diameter and 1.20 meters in height, was completed. This oven is located outside the defensive enclosure. The structure, dated between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC, preserves the entrance to the underground combustion chamber where the oven was fed for the firing of ceramic pieces.

Alto Chacón: Metallurgy and Ovens from the 5th Century BC

The work in Teruel focused on two sectors of the settlement, documenting an access zone with a street and a metallurgical workspace. In one of the ovens discovered, a seed was dated, suggesting that these structures belong to the early phases of the settlement, dating back to the 5th century BC.

La Caridad: Domestic Furnishings and Roman Kitchen

In Caminreal, the fortieth excavation campaign is underway in Insula VII, where the best-preserved kitchen in the entire site has been documented. Among the findings are agricultural tools, domestic ceramics, spindles for spinning, and a large sickle, all dated between the end of the 2nd century and the beginning of the 1st century BC.

Institutional and Training Balance

Beatriz Ezquerra, director of the Teruel Museum, described the balance as very positive since all planned objectives were met. The campaign allowed ten students to undertake internships in Alto Chacón, while students from Teruel, Zaragoza, and Madrid participated in the other sites.

The first deputy president and delegated councilor of the Museum, Beatriz Martín, highlighted the potential of heritage as a driver of provincial development and the importance of supporting the work of local researchers and archaeologists.

Chronology of the Campaigns

The excavations were carried out incrementally: Alto Chacón began in June, Cabezo de San Pedro took place between June 16 and August 14, and La Caridad started at the end of August, with the expectation to conclude next week.
