Zaragoza has taken a giant leap in its international projection by being designated as one of the five finalist cities for the title of European Green Capital in 2028. This award honors urban centers that excel in environmental policies and their capacity to lead the transition to a healthier and more sustainable way of life.
The Aragonese bid has successfully passed the demanding initial technical evaluation. In the final stretch of the competition, Zaragoza will compete against Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko-Biała (Poland), Košice (Slovakia), and Porto (Portugal). The name of the winning city will be revealed on October 7 and 8 in Guimarães (Portugal).
A Cross-Cutting Model of Sustainability
To achieve this milestone, Zaragoza has presented a comprehensive strategy in which sustainability does not function as an isolated element, but rather as a cross-cutting axis that defines all municipal planning. The city’s mayor has described the nomination as a tremendous source of pride, emphasizing the international support.
Among the strengths of Zaragoza’s candidacy is a new approach to urban green management, evident in the revitalization of large parks and pioneering initiatives such as The Forest of the Zaragoza Citizens.
In addition to green infrastructure, decisive advancements in mobility and transportation have been made. The city council has accelerated the electrification of its public fleet and the design of new cycling and pedestrian routes.
Final Defense in Portugal
Looking ahead to the final decision, the European jury will assess both past achievements as well as environmental governance, citizen involvement, and the projects the city plans to implement if it wins. The winning city is expected to serve as an inspiration to other municipalities in their fight against climate change.
This nomination is part of a series of international recognitions for Zaragoza, which also includes its designation as European City of Sport 2027 and the Accessible City Award 2026.
