Zaragoza: The Global Capital of Garnacha – A Celebration of Wine, Sustainability, and Culture by the Ebro

In the fertile lands of Aragón, where the winds of Moncayo shape the landscape and garnacha finds its most authentic expression, Zaragoza is establishing itself as the international epicenter of this noble varietal. From June 4 to 7, 2026, the city will host the II International Garnacha and Sustainable Gastronomy Fair at Macanaz Park, an event that, following its successful debut in 2025 (with over 20,000 visitors), is growing in ambition and appeal.

This is not just another wine festival. It is a living manifestation of Zaragoza’s recognition as the World Capital of Garnacha and its recent designation as a UNESCO City of Creative Gastronomy. These two distinctions position the Aragonese capital on the global map of wine tourism and culinary innovation.

The Aragonese Garnacha: Character, Terroir, and Elegance

The garnacha, that resilient and expressive Mediterranean variety, finds its fullest expression in Aragón. In Campo de Borja, centuries-old vineyards produce powerful and silky reds, with the fruity maturity and polished tannins that have won over international critics. In Cariñena, garnacha exhibits a more mineral and fresh profile, reflecting the stony soils and elevation. And in Calatayud, high-altitude garnachas, often from old vines, offer exceptional complexity and longevity.

The fair will bring together wineries from these three Denominations of Origin in the province, with Vinos de Madrid participating this year as the guest region, fostering exchange among sibling wine regions. At the booths in Macanaz Park, visitors will be able to taste and buy directly in a privileged setting overlooking the Basilica del Pilar and adjacent to the Garnacha Garden.

A Program for All the Senses

The second edition will expand to four days and enhance its offerings:

  • Tastings and guided sessions led by winemakers.
  • Pairings with local products and proposals for sustainable gastronomy.
  • A picnic area and a boutique market for outdoor enjoyment.
  • An impressive Vibra Garnacha stage featuring live performances from local bands such as The Cucumbers, Mabuse and los Compayos, La Máquina de Turing, and The Bronson, as well as DJ sets.
  • Immersive elements like a five-meter garnacha tunnel, giant glass photo backdrops, and identifying arches for each DO.

Simultaneously, on June 3, 4, and 5, the Excellence and Inspiration Meetings will be held, a high-level professional program linking wine with business, architecture, and design. Notable figures such as Japanese architect Shigeru Ban (2014 Pritzker Prize winner), Dean of the IE School of Architecture Marta Thorne, and other international experts will participate.

Additionally, the GastroGarnacha initiative will extend the festivities throughout the city’s bars and restaurants with special tapas, paired menus, and promotions that invite the discovery of garnacha beyond the park.

Experience Tourism: Wine, Heritage, and Sustainability

The fair aligns perfectly with the global trend of experiential and responsible tourism. In Zaragoza, wine tourism goes beyond tastings: it includes routes through historic vineyards, visits to wineries with unique architecture, local gastronomy, and a clear commitment to sustainability.

Just a few kilometers from the city, visitors can explore the stunning “Bodegas Palacios” in Campo de Borja, wander the cobblestone streets of Cariñena, or ascend to the heights of Calatayud to understand why these garnachas are unique. All of this is complemented by Zaragoza’s rich heritage: the Basilica del Pilar, La Seo, the Aljafería Palace, and a vibrant cultural scene.

An Unmissable Event for Wine Lovers and Cultural Travelers

The International Garnacha and Sustainable Gastronomy Fair is becoming one of Spain’s most promising wine tourism events. It is a weekend where wine transcends being just a beverage, becoming a vehicle for culture, landscape, tradition, and a sustainable future.

If you’re planning a trip this June, book now. Because in Zaragoza, garnacha is not just consumed: it is experienced, celebrated, and its Aragonese soul is understood.

Cheers and welcome to the heart of garnacha!
