The Castle of Biel: an architectural jewel of the Middle Ages in Aragon

In the province of Zaragoza, in the heart of the Cinco Villas region, is the Castle of Biel, an architectural jewel that takes us back to the Middle Ages. The origin of this imposing castle dates back to the reign of Sancho III el Mayor, although it is believed that the tower is the work of Norman builders in the time of Sancho Ramirez around 1060.

Biel is a charming village in the region of Cinco Villas in Aragon, Spain. Located in a privileged natural environment, it is surrounded by mountains and green valleys. The village is characterized by its narrow cobbled streets, stone houses and beautiful squares. Biel has a rich history that dates back to Roman times and is reflected in its monuments and historic buildings, such as the church of Santa Maria, the Castle of Biel and the Palace of the Sada. The local gastronomy is another of the attractions of Biel, where you can taste typical dishes of Aragonese cuisine, such as roast lamb, veal and the famous wine of the region.

The Castle of Biel is located within an irregular wall and stands out for its great tower, of which only the outer walls remain. With a total height of 25 meters, this tower had five floors of 105 square meters each, plus an open platform on the top floor. The palace-tower structure allowed the wooden floor of each floor to be supported by four semicircular arches from the previous floor.

Although Biel Castle has undergone numerous modifications over the centuries, its beauty and grandeur have been preserved to this day. Currently, the castle is undergoing a process of restoration and has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Government of Aragon.

In addition to its historical and architectural value, Biel Castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. From its tower, it is possible to observe the green landscapes and the mountains surrounding the Cinco Villas region.

Biel Castle is definitely a must-see for lovers of history and medieval architecture. If you are planning a trip to Aragon, be sure to include in your itinerary this impressive fortress, which will take you back in time to the era of kings and knights.
