Major Goya Exhibition Set to Open at Zaragoza’s Palacio de la Aljafería in 2024

The Palacio de la Aljafería in Zaragoza is set to debut a monumental exhibition entitled «Goya, del Museo al Palacio,» dedicated to the illustrious Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. Launching on December 5, 2024, this extensive exhibition will feature a comprehensive overview of Goya’s artistic journey, aimed at both art enthusiasts and the general public.

Goya Artwork

This exhibition will include 62 works by Goya, ranging from paintings and prints to various artifacts. The showcased pieces will highlight key phases of his career, from his formative years in Zaragoza and Italy to his significant role as a court painter. Key artworks will include notable portraits such as «Retrato del Rey Carlos IV» and «Retrato del Rey Fernando VII,” alongside his famed series “Los Caprichos” and “Los Desastres de la Guerra.” Also featured will be an interactive digital version of «Cuaderno Italiano» and a poignant letter penned by Goya to his friend Martín Zapater in 1780.

Additional Goya Artwork

Housed across several salas within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palacio de la Aljafería, the exhibition will be well-curated to enhance visitor experience. Specific areas, such as the Sala de Pedro IV, will specifically focus on Goya’s graphic work, while the Salón del Trono will display his regal portraits. This thoughtful layout is designed to provide a deeper understanding of Goya’s diverse artistic influences and contributions.

The exhibition is a collaborative venture involving the Government of Aragón, the Cortes de Aragón, and various cultural institutions, realized through a cooperation agreement established in May 2024, amounting to an investment of 774,000 euros.

Visitor details have been made accessible, with the exhibition open from 10:00 to 18:00. Tickets will be priced at 7 euros for general entry and 9 euros for guided tours, while those from large families, retirees, and individuals with disabilities will gain free admission. Group visits will be limited to 15 attendees for the general public, whereas school groups may have a maximum of 25 participants.

As one of Zaragoza’s most iconic monuments, the Palacio de la Aljafería anticipates a significant increase in tourism due to this exhibition. Additionally, this event serves as a precursor to the commemorative activities leading to the 200th anniversary of Goya’s passing in 2028.

The «Goya, del Museo al Palacio» exhibition promises to be a pivotal cultural event in 2024, offering visitors a comprehensive insight into Goya’s life and legacy. Its well-curated collection in a historic venue highlights Goya’s enduring influence on the world of art.
