Successful Restoration of the Tower at La Hoz de la Vieja Castle for 101,171.67 Euros

The restoration of the tower of the castle of La Hoz de la Vieja has successfully concluded, thanks to an investment of €101,171.67 from the Government of Aragón. This intervention has been crucial in halting the deterioration of the monument and preserving its historical and scenic value.

Details of the Intervention and Its Financing

The General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage of the Government of Aragón has led the restoration of the castle tower, awarding the contract to the company Prames S.A. in November of last year. The total budget amounted to €101,171.67, including VAT. The intervention focused on a heritage asset with thick masonry walls, situated above the urban center of La Hoz de la Vieja.

Before the restoration, the tower was in very poor condition, with the loss of structural elements, instability in the battlements and parapets, and erosion in joints and ashlars. Additionally, vegetation had invaded the structure, worsening its deterioration.

Consolidation Process and Achievements

The consolidation work began on December 9 of last year and was completed in May. The efforts included cleaning, remediation, and removal of vegetation, as well as biocide treatments and techniques for filling voids with lime slurries. The battlements, parapets, and walls were also consolidated, improving the monument’s stability and safety.

Thanks to these actions, the process of ruin of the castle has been halted, reinforcing its stability and ensuring the preservation of its historical and architectural values for future generations.

Future of the Castle: Accessibility and Public Use

To continue preserving and enhancing the castle, the Government of Aragón has commissioned Siste Arquitectura S.L.P. to design the accessibility and restoration project. This project, which will cost €14,153.35, will make the tower accessible to the public, facilitating visits to its interior and creating exhibition spaces that will explain its history and features.

Visitors are expected to be able to access the top of the tower, where they can enjoy the surrounding landscape from the crenelated walk, thereby integrating the monument into the cultural and tourist environment of the region.
