Zaragoza Looks to European Flower Markets to Revitalize the Heart of Gancho

Flowers, gastronomy, music, family activities, and pets will transform the José María Forqué square into a temporary urban garden once a month. The initiative aims to attract visitors and support the commerce and hospitality sectors of Zamoray-Pignatelli.

Some squares change when the activities within them change. Zaragoza aims to test this theory in the José María Forqué square, located in the heart of Zamoray-Pignatelli. The City Council is preparing a flower and pet market inspired by traditional European flower markets, designed to reclaim the space as a meeting point and generate economic activity in the neighborhood.

The event will take place on the first Sunday of each month from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The first three editions could kick off as early as September.

A garden that appears once a month

The proposal consists of temporarily transforming the square into an ephemeral urban garden. Traditional-inspired wooden stalls, greenery, umbrellas, and textiles will create an atmosphere reminiscent of flower markets in other European cities. The layout has been designed to be accessible and to encourage strolling among the exhibitors.

The idea originated from the local residents. The initial focus on flowers was later expanded to include companion animals. The result will be an unusual mix in Zaragoza: nature, small commerce, pets, gastronomy, music, and cultural activities all in one space.

Much more than just buying flowers

The market will not be limited to sales. There will be live music and DJ sessions, a food area featuring food trucks, floral workshops, family activities, and artistic installations designed for photography and rediscovery of this corner of the city.

The intention is for visitors not to merely browse the stalls but to stay and spend the morning in the neighborhood. This duration is key: the activity should also positively impact the local hospitality and commerce.

Pets will have their space

Companion animals will be another focal point of the project. There will be a specific area with exhibitors offering food, accessories, artisanal products, and animal welfare, along with rest areas, water stations, and professional advice.

Zaragoza is thus incorporating pets into a leisure proposal that aspires to become a recurring family event.

A tool for Zamoray-Pignatelli

Behind the flowers, music, and gastronomy lies a broader goal: to contribute to the revitalization of Zamoray-Pignatelli and the Gancho area. The City Council aims for the market to increase foot traffic in the area, promote consumption in local hospitality and commerce, and provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small producers.

This is an urban dynamization experiment that uses leisure and commerce as tools to engage with public space.

The Councilor for the Environment and Mobility, Tatiana Gaudes, stated that the goal is for the neighborhood to regain dynamism and become an attractive place for Zaragoza residents. She also highlighted the community-driven origin of the proposal and its integration into the strategy for the recovery of Zamoray-Pignatelli.

A square to linger in

Once a month, the José María Forqué square will change its appearance. Where there is usually an urban square, plants, wooden stalls, gastronomy, music, families, and companion animals will appear. The idea is simple: to use a periodic activity to encourage citizens to revisit — and particularly to make use of — this space in the city.

If it manages to establish itself and attract an audience edition after edition, the Flower and Pet Market could become more than just a proposal for Sunday mornings. It could demonstrate that sometimes revitalizing a neighborhood starts by giving people a good reason to return to its streets.
