Amazon to Build Three More Data Centers in Aragón with Over $33.7 Billion Investment

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a historic investment of €33.7 billion in Spain to expand its data center infrastructure, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. This announcement, made during the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, represents the multinational’s largest bet in the country, resulting from intense negotiations with the Spanish government.

Details of the multimillion-euro investment

The total investment of €33.7 billion is broken down into €18 billion additional to the €15.7 billion already confirmed for 2024. These funds will be used to expand and strengthen data center infrastructure, providing advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing capabilities to organizations across Europe. This strategic move underscores Spain’s growing importance as a technology hub on the continent.

Focus on Aragon

The investment will primarily concentrate in Aragon, covering the provinces of Teruel, Huesca, and Zaragoza. Amazon thus becomes the first technology company to announce plans to build data centers in Teruel, in addition to expanding its facilities in the other two provinces. This decision reinforces Aragon’s role as a pivotal center for technology and innovation in Spain.

Impact on employment and territorial development

It is expected that the investment will generate an average of 29,900 annual jobs in local companies, including direct, indirect, and induced jobs. Of these, 6,700 will be full-time positions for highly skilled professionals in data center operations, employees of AWS suppliers, workers for facility construction, and security personnel. Additionally, approximately 1,800 more jobs are expected to be created in Aragon, linked to the construction of supply chain facilities.

The Minister for Digital Transformation, Óscar López, has emphasized the government’s commitment to ensure that this investment transcends the mere establishment of data centers, promoting social and territorial cohesion through talent development, support for research centers, and collaboration with public universities.

Since its arrival in Spain in 2011, Amazon has invested over €20 billion in the country, encompassing retail operations, logistics network, cloud infrastructure, and AI, as well as community development and innovation programs. The operation of data centers in Spain began in 2022 with the launch of the Europe (Spain) Region of AWS in Aragon, marking the start of a new era of technological investments in the country.
