What to Do in Aragón in August: Glacial Lakes, Starry Nights, Ancestral Traditions, and Colorful Festivals

August arrives with its intense heat, but in Aragón, finding a cool refuge is as easy as opening the window to the nature and vibrant culture that pulses in every corner. This month, the autonomous community unfolds a range of plans for those looking to enjoy a tranquil summer, away from the hustle and bustle, yet with the thrill of discovering unique landscapes, timeless traditions, and nights that invite dreaming.

At Go Aragón, we have selected some essential experiences for enjoying a different August, in touch with the essence of this land. Because here, beaches are not needed to refresh the body and soul: sparkling lakes, starry skies, evening strolls under soft light, and popular festivals keep the heart of its towns alive.

The jewels of the Pyrenees: the ibones, lakes with soul and legend

things to do in Aragón summer

In Aragón, the word «ibón» is almost a magical whisper that refers to the glacial lakes of the Pyrenees, natural jewels known for their purity, unique beauty, and remote origins. These lakes, sculpted thousands of years ago by ice, offer an ideal environment for family getaways, couple walks, or solo adventures.

There is no better way to connect with nature than to traverse the paths that lead to these mirrors of water reflecting the snow-capped peaks and blue sky. Some, like the Ibón de Estanés or Anayet, are accessible by car or via tourist trains that bring travelers closer to a dreamy landscape with little effort. Others, like the Ibón de Marboré or Plan, require a short hike that rewards with unforgettable views.

The ibones impress not only with their surroundings but also with the stories that surround them. Some tell legends of fairies and mountain spirits that protect these waters, and fishermen who have experienced unique moments on their shores. Black pine forests, flower-filled meadows, and rock formations that defy the passage of time surround these cold water jewels, creating corners for contemplation and adventure.

We suggest ten destinations to «ibonear» this summer: Estanés, Acherito, Anayet, Azules, Arrieles, Bernatuara, Marboré, Plan, Escarpinosa, and Batisielles. Which one will you start with?

Skies that invite dreaming: astrotourism as a stellar experience

If during the day Aragón impresses with its landscapes and history, as night falls, the magic multiplies under a sky that seems to have come straight out of a science fiction tale. The lack of light pollution, the vast territory, and small populations allow the stars to shine brightly, illuminating the Milky Way and a thousand constellations that surprise anyone who lifts their gaze.

Astronomical tourism has become one of the major attractions in Aragón, offering activities designed for all audiences. In Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel, you will find romantic dinners under the starry mantle, guided observations in vineyards or natural areas, and night photography courses to capture the beauty of the night sky. You can also join practical workshops such as telescope making or horseback rides under the full moon, for a unique experience in touch with nature and the cosmos.

One of the leading institutions is Galáctica, a Center for the Dissemination and Practice of Astronomy, located in Arcos de las Salinas, Teruel. Inaugurated in 2023, it is the first park in Europe that combines scientific dissemination and direct observation of the sky for all ages. Here, visitors can deepen their knowledge of the universe while enjoying educational activities and contemplating the stars in a privileged environment.

So, if you have not yet tried it, we encourage you to «look up» and discover the universe from the heart of Aragón.

Nocturnal Zaragoza: a route of light and silence between churches

Zaragoza is not only a city of history and art but also offers experiences that awaken the senses in the heart of the night during summer. The FIAT LUX initiative proposes two exclusive routes to visit the most emblematic churches of the historic center under the soft glow of nighttime lighting.

These guided tours allow you to wander, in a tranquil setting away from the usual bustle, through the cathedrals of La Seo and El Pilar, or the city’s most venerated temples. More than just a simple stroll, it is an invitation to experience Aragón’s heritage through silence, light, and contemplation.

The lights highlight the architectural details, paintings, and altarpieces, as the visitor immerses themselves in a universe of unique, almost mystical dimensions. A perfect opportunity to rediscover Zaragoza from a different perspective, much more intimate and measured.

Ansó: tradition and color in the Day of the Ansotano Costume

On the last Sunday of August, the Pyrenean village of Ansó becomes a living museum of traditions with the celebration of the Day of the Ansotano Costume, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

Locals dress in their regional costumes, made of wool dyed red and green for women and black for men, adorned with details on the shoulders, chest, and head. This attire, one of the most beautiful and unique in Aragón, has been immortalized by artists like Sorolla and is a symbol of the cultural heritage of the valley.

Throughout the day, Ansó revives old customs and daily tasks, showcasing a living collection of models: wedding outfits, fieldwork clothes, or religious event garments. The square and the streets of the village transform into a historic runway that connects us with the past and the soul of this Pyrenean corner, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain.
