D.O.P. Calatayud strengthens its international projection with participation in ‘Planeta Rioja’ and Polish commercial mission
The Protected Designation of Origin of Calatayud has intensified its internationalization strategy through two simultaneous actions: participation in the II International Wine Fair Planeta Rioja 2025 and the organization of a reverse mission with Polish importers. These initiatives aim to consolidate the presence of Aragonese wines in key markets and particularly promote the high-altitude garnacha that characterizes this designation.
Participation in Planeta Rioja 2025
On September 13, D.O.P. Calatayud participated in the II International Wine Fair Planeta Rioja 2025, held in Logroño. The event brought together wineries and designations from La Rioja, Aragón, and France, constituting a benchmark forum for the promotion of wine, gastronomy, and culture.
Calatayud’s presence alongside the Aragonese designations of Cariñena and Campo de Borja enhanced the visibility of Aragonese wines in a space dedicated to showcasing the oenological richness of the regions and fostering cooperation among them. The denomination took advantage of this platform to highlight the uniqueness of its high-altitude garnachas, recognized internationally for their quality and character.
Reverse mission with Polish importers
Complementarily, from September 14 to 17, D.O.P. Calatayud is conducting a reverse mission with Polish importers, organized in collaboration with Aragón Exterior (AREX). A group of importers, distributors, and influencers from the European country is visiting the denomination’s wineries to learn directly about its vineyards, production processes, and wine tourism proposals.
This action is part of the internationalization strategy that views Poland as a strategic market due to the growing interest in Spanish wines and Aragonese garnacha. According to information from Aragón Exterior, Poland has seen a notable increase in wine consumption in recent years, especially among younger generations, which opens up new business opportunities.
Characteristics of the denomination
Established since 1989, D.O.P. Calatayud is one of the most unique wine regions in Aragón. Its vineyards are situated between 550 and 1,040 meters in altitude, making them some of the highest in Aragón and also among the oldest, with references to vine cultivation dating back to the 2nd century BC.
The denomination covers more than 3,600 hectares across 46 municipalities in the province of Zaragoza. The 14 wineries that comprise it are identified by the high-altitude Garnacha, a variety that represents about 70% of its production, characterized by wines of great intensity, freshness, and mineral characteristics.
With these combined actions, the Protected Designation of Origin of Calatayud reaffirms its commitment to external promotion and the consolidation of its brand in key markets, strengthening its role as a reference in the international projection of Aragonese wines.
