Dr. Schär’s plant in Alagón, Zaragoza, stands out as the world’s largest gluten-free product factory, establishing Aragón as a reference point in the agri-food industry. The recent visit by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, Javier Rincón, alongside Amparo Cuéllar, General Director of Innovation and Food Promotion, underscores the regional government’s commitment to the sector and its economic development.
Strategic support for Aragonese agri-industry
The Government of Aragón has strengthened its support for the agri-industry through a aid plan of 18.5 million euros, adding to more than 16 million from previous calls. This support aims to modernize facilities, enhance competitiveness, and attract investments. According to Rincón, companies like Dr. Schär demonstrate that Aragón is a competitive industrial destination, thanks to its strategic location, robust infrastructure, and qualified human capital.
Dr. Schär: A leader in innovation and gluten-free production
Founded in 1922, Dr. Schär has established itself as a global leader in gluten-free food. The Alagón plant, unique in Spain, is the most significant within its international network. Specializing in the production of gluten-free bread, pastries, cookies, pizzas, and pasta, it combines industrial production with research and development of high value-added health and nutrition products.
In recent years, the plant has made significant investments totaling 60 million euros. Notably, there is a new gluten-free bread line, with an investment of 17 million euros, and the recent inauguration of a pastry line in 2023. Currently, it employs 244 workers and allocates approximately 85% of its production to exports, strengthening Aragón’s position in high value-added segments.
Public-private collaboration for sustainable development
Collaboration between administrations and companies is key to driving solid industrial projects. Rincón emphasized that the Government of Aragón will continue to support the agri-food sector with policies that facilitate investment, innovation, and sustainable growth. The agri-food industry is one of the main economic engines of the Community, and its strengthening is essential for territorial development.
