Aragón Launches the First Teacher Support Unit in Spain
Aragón has established the Teacher Support Unit (UAD), a pioneering resource in Spain aimed at enhancing the emotional, professional, and social well-being of teachers. The initiative was presented by the Minister of Education, Tomasa Hernández, and the Director General of Personnel, José María Cabello, making it the first autonomous community to implement a comprehensive support service specifically for educators.
The creators justified the establishment of the UAD by the growing concerns regarding the situation of teachers in Spain. According to presented data, over 80% of teachers have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression in recent years, nearly half find their work very stressful, 40% suffer from professional burnout, and lack motivation. This situation is exacerbated by high conflict levels in classrooms and the lack of social recognition for the profession.
The UAD aims to care for those who uphold the educational system. It will provide psychological and emotional support and guidance, legal advice in conflict situations or claims, and work to dignify the teaching profession by highlighting its essential role in the construction of a more educated and critical society.
Operation and Scope
The operational procedure is managed through the website apoyodocente.catedu.es, where teachers will report their cases to receive personalized attention. A multidisciplinary team consisting of nine professionals from educational inspection, mediation services, wellness mentoring, and specialized coexistence teams will conduct a personalized assessment of each situation. The UAD will serve approximately 27,000 teachers from publicly funded institutions.
The creation of the UAD is part of improvements in working conditions and compensation, with a projected investment of 126 million in funding until 2027. The measures include a reduction in teaching workload, a 7% increase for management teams, recognition of the tutorial role, and a 4.5% increase for all teachers, which will take effect in January.
