Holy Week in Huesca 2026: March 27 to April 5, Featuring a New Descent Procession and Revived Traditional Route

The Holy Week of Huesca 2026 introduces one of its most anticipated novelties: the Procession of the Descent, which will take place for the first time on its own after 75 years of history of the namesake brotherhood. This addition marks a milestone in the Huesca celebration, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Aragón, combining Pyrenean solemnity, centuries-old floats, and the characteristic sound of drums and cornets. From March 27 to April 5, the capital of Huesca experiences a week of renewed fervor, with around 1,200 cofrades participating in key events such as the Holy Burial and an atmosphere that invites the discovery of religious and urban heritage from the historic center to iconic neighborhoods.

The Premiere: Procession of the Descent, a Milestone for its 75th Anniversary

The Brotherhood of the Descent, founded in 1951, celebrates its 75th anniversary with a unique event: its first individual procession in 75 years. Until now, its float had been part of the general procession on Good Friday; in 2026, it takes center stage.

  • Date and Time: Holy Saturday, April 4, at 6:00 PM.
  • Departure: From the Parish of the Incarnation (neighborhood of La Encarnación).
  • Route: Ingeniero Cajal Lasala → Martínez de Velasco → Ingeniero Susín → Alcoraz → Plaza de Navarra → Berenger → San Orencio → San Lorenzo → Coso Bajo → Santo Domingo, concluding at the Church of Santo Domingo.
  • Context: A long and central route that crosses the city, recovering the traditional essence after the alternative route in 2025 due to works. Stewards José Luis Gómez Mairal and José María Río have highlighted their excitement for having their own parade.

This unique procession on Holy Saturday adds an emotional chapter to the program, focusing on the moment of Christ’s Descent from the Cross, and reinforces the diversity of events in a Holy Week that aims to awaken more fervor among the residents of Huesca and visitors.

Other Novelties and the General Program

Alongside the Descent, the following stand out:

  • First Processional Parade of María Santísima de la Salud y de las Lágrimas (Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene), which will accompany the Nazarene in his procession on Holy Wednesday night.
  • Recovery of Historical Routes: The Holy Burial on Good Friday (April 3) returns to the classic Coso Alto.
  • Inaugural Announcement: On March 27 at 8:00 PM in the Church of Santo Domingo and San Martín, led by the new bishop of Huesca, Pedro Aguado, with presentation by the general vicar José Alegre and entertainment by the Coral Oscense.
  • Other Key Events: Procession of the Entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), Official Stations of the Cross, night processions on Holy Thursday, the Holy Burial, and the Glorious Encounter on Resurrection Sunday.

The Huesca Holy Week maintains its sober and mountainous essence: Baroque and Renaissance floats, active brotherhoods, and a sound that alternates between silence and the thunder of drums. With this new feature of the Descent, Huesca 2026 invites you to experience the Passion with renewed eyes: a tradition that renews itself without losing its roots, set against a backdrop of Romanesque cathedral, cobbled streets, and views of the Pyrenees.

If you are planning a getaway, combine the processions with visits to the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum, or the nearby Guara Canyons. The Holy Week of Huesca beats strongly this year: come discover the premiere everyone is talking about. From March 27 to April 5, the city is dressed in devotion and novelty.
