The Ibercaja Foundation has announced the 25 finalists of the first edition of Docentes Referentes, a national program aimed at highlighting educational excellence in Spain. On the occasion of the foundation’s 150th anniversary, this initiative has received 478 applications from active teachers across the country, aiming to recognize their commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in education.
Recognition of Educational Excellence in Spain
Docentes Referentes is directed at teachers from all educational stages, ranging from Early Childhood Education to Vocational Training, in public, charter, and private institutions. The call for applications has seen a wide participation, reflecting the high level of involvement among Spanish educators. The award ceremony will take place in Zaragoza, presided over by H.R.H. Infanta Doña Sofía, underscoring the importance of education in society.
The 25 finalists, selected across five categories, come from 11 autonomous communities. These categories include Educational Leadership, Sustainability in Education, Inclusive Education, Educational Research and Knowledge Transfer, and Comprehensive Education for Health. Each category highlights different aspects of teaching that contribute to the holistic development of students.
Evaluation and Awards
An independent jury, composed of representatives from leading educational institutions, will be responsible for choosing the winners in each category. Among the jury members are notable figures such as Stefania Giannini, Director General of Education at UNESCO, and Chema Vera, National Director of UNICEF. The five winning projects will receive funding of 12,000 euros each, making this recognition one of the most significant for the teaching profession in Spain.
Additionally, all finalists will receive a diploma, reinforcing the institutional character of the initiative. This recognition not only rewards educational excellence but also aims to encourage teachers to continue innovating and improving the quality of teaching in their respective contexts.
