The Iberian lynxes Windtail and Wynx have arrived in Aragón, marking a milestone in the reintroduction of this species in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. These individuals are currently in the acclimatization phase within a pre-release enclosure in Torrecilla de Valmadrid, Zaragoza, positioning Aragón as a pioneer in the recovery of the Iberian lynx, which has been extinct in the region since the last century.
Strict Monitoring and Optimal Conditions for Acclimatization
Windtail and Wynx, coming from captive breeding centers, are showing good initial adaptation in their new environment. The General Directorate of Natural Resources, Hunting, and Fishing of Aragón closely monitors their progress through camera traps and GPS tracking systems, ensuring that any needs of the lynxes are addressed immediately.
The acclimatization enclosure, specifically designed for this critical phase, covers 18,000 square meters and stands over four meters tall. This space not only provides security but also encourages the learning of essential survival skills, such as rabbit hunting, which is their primary prey.
A Strategic Environment in the Huerva Basin
The area selected for reintroduction, located in the Huerva basin, encompasses 27,500 hectares and has been validated by the Iberian lynx working group. This region offers a suitable habitat and a high density of rabbits, key factors for the success of the reintroduction project.
During their stay in the enclosure, the technical team constantly evaluates the behavior, health status, and adaptability of the lynxes. This monitoring is essential to ensure that Windtail and Wynx are prepared to successfully integrate into their natural environment, contributing to the recovery of an emblematic species in Aragón.
