Ibercaja Foundation opens the «Opel love» exhibition at Mobility City featuring unique pieces from the German museum
The exhibition features 25 historical pieces from the German brand, which will be on display at the Zaha Hadid Bridge until March 2026. The exhibition highlights the special connection between Opel and its Figueruelas plant, valuing the people who have built this story in Zaragoza.
Relationship between Opel and the Aragonese community
Ibercaja Foundation has organized «Opel love» with the goal of bringing the visitors closer to the relationship between the German brand and the Aragonese community. The inauguration was attended by Fernando Beltrán (Government Delegate in Aragón), Mar Vaquero (Vice President of the Government of Aragón), Manuel Blasco (Councillor for the Environment and Tourism), José Luis Rodrigo (General Director of Ibercaja Foundation), Leif Rohwedder (Manager of Opel Classic), Jaime Armengol (Director of Mobility City), and Antonio Cobo (former director of Stellantis Zaragoza and curator of the exhibition).
Mobility City presents this exhibition not only to showcase iconic vehicles but also to recognize the value of the individuals who have made the brand’s history in Zaragoza possible, projecting a legacy of effort, ingenuity, and innovation.
Iconic vehicles from Opel
The exhibition includes classic cars, vehicles that marked milestones in the automotive industry, unique prototypes, and other items such as sewing machines and bicycles. Among the most notable pieces from Rüsselsheim are:
Patent-Motorwagen Sistema Lutzmann: Manufactured in 1899, it was Opel’s first automobile and is probably the only remaining model in the world. Its resemblance to a horse-drawn carriage without a shaft is evident.
Doktorwagen: This represented the moment when the automobile shifted from being a luxury good to an everyday vehicle. Sales increased from 100 cars in 1902 to 1,000 in four years.
4 CV «Laubfrosch»: The first mass-produced model on an assembly line, characterized by its green color (its name translates to «tree frog»). Only about 100 examples remain in circulation in Europe.
Other historical models: The elegant Admiral (1939), the 1956 Kapitän (which was the factory’s 2 millionth car), the brand’s first sports car, the Couplé Diplomat (1969), and the Opel OSV 40 (Opel Safety Vehicle) from the 1970s, which highlighted the brand’s awareness of driving safety.
The Corsa, an icon of Figueruelas
The Corsa model occupies a central place in the exhibition. Over 3.1 million units of the Corsa A were produced, and across six generations, the figure rises to more than 14 million. With the production of the Corsa, Zaragoza entered the scene with the opening of the factory in Figueruelas, where this vehicle began to be produced. The exhibition includes the Corsa B «Moon».
Prototypes such as the Scamp 2, which explored the concept of mini SUVs and urban crossovers, and the 1995 MAXX, an innovative urban car concept of the future, are also displayed.
Moving towards the future
The tour concludes with three recent models: the futuristic 2011 RAKe with ecological propulsion (whose design was transferred almost unchanged to the Opel Mokka), and the Manta GSe ElektroMOD, the first electric restomod from Opel with powerful torque at the rear axle, zero emissions, and reinterpreted design. The latter was developed by a small group of engineers, designers, and technicians in Rüsselsheim and has received awards in Paris and Germany.
World launch in Zaragoza
Coinciding with the inauguration of the exhibition, Opel chose the Zaha Hadid Bridge for the world launch of the Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo concept, which provides a glimpse of upcoming GSE models in the small car segment and merges digital dimensions with the real world for the first time.
Ibercaja Foundation, which will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2026, shares with Opel a vision of the future based on innovation, commitment to people, and constant transformation. The exhibition at Mobility City connects past and future, memory and progress, recovering the memories of many visitors.
The Foundation is a private non-profit entity resulting from the transformation of the Savings Bank and Piety Fund of Zaragoza, Aragón, and Rioja, Ibercaja. Its institutional aims are the creation, implementation, and promotion of social and cultural works, driving the development of individuals and improving the territory. Four fundamental values guide its actions: commitment, transparency, professionalism, and dynamism.
