Teruel: Prime Location for September’s Total Lunar Eclipse by National Geographic

The province of Teruel positions itself as one of the best places in the world to enjoy the upcoming total lunar eclipse, which will occur on the night of Sunday, September 7. According to a recent article by National Geographic, the region is notable for its dark skies and low light pollution, making it ideal for observing this astronomical phenomenon, known as the ‘Blood Moon’ due to the reddish hue the Moon takes on when it is enveloped in the Earth’s shadow.

The eclipse, visible across much of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, will begin its partial phase at 18:27 (CEST) and reach totality between 19:31 and 20:53, with its peak at 20:11. In Teruel, locations such as the Sierra de Gúdar-Javalambre, certified as a Starlight Reserve, and the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory (Galáctica) offer an unbeatable environment. These areas, away from urban lights, allow for sharp observation of the Moon’s details during its penumbral, partial, and total phases.

National Geographic emphasizes that the altitude of the mountain range and the clarity of its skies make Teruel a go-to destination for astronomy enthusiasts. The Galáctica Center, located in Arcos de las Salinas, may organize guided observations with telescopes, providing a unique opportunity to enjoy the event. Other recommended spots include the Pico del Buitre and the area around Valdelinares, where the clear horizons facilitate the view of the low Moon at the start of the eclipse.

No eye protection is needed to observe this phenomenon, and experts recommend bringing binoculars or a small telescope to capture the details of the reddish hue, caused by the refraction of sunlight in the Earth’s atmosphere. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts clear skies in Teruel for that night, promising an unforgettable experience.

For those in the region, the recommendation is clear: seek an elevated location, away from artificial lights, and prepare for a celestial spectacle. If you cannot travel, platforms such as the NASA YouTube channel will offer live broadcasts. Teruel, once again, proves that it is a unique corner to connect with the cosmos.
