Valentia has presented two innovative research studies at the III International Congress «Thinking about Education» in Huesca, in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza. These studies highlight how the combination of scientific and humanistic methodologies can transform the learning of adults with intellectual disabilities.
Joel Antequera Segovia, a trainer for Valentia’s Impulsa program, along with researchers from the University of Zaragoza, presented a study titled «Analysis of an Educational Program in the Development of Executive Functions in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities». This analysis reveals that a program integrating gamified cognitive training and dialogical work based on poetry significantly improves participants’ autonomy, memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. The research suggests that educational proposals can be more effective when combining scientific evidence with a humanistic approach.
Redesigning the Classroom as an Active Agent
In another presentation, Andrea Oliván Pociello and Joel Antequera Segovia introduced «The Classroom as a Pedagogical Agent: An Innovative Proposal for Redesigning Educational Spaces to Enhance Learning in Intellectual Disabilities». This project redefines the classroom not only as a container but as an active educational tool. It proposes an accessible space design that promotes participation, self-regulation, emotional well-being, and functional learning, aligning methodology, accessibility, and the physical environment.
Valentia’s Philosophy and Participation
Both studies reflect the approach of Valentia’s Impulsa program, which focuses on the individual and is evidence-based, considering the cognitive, emotional, and physical conditions that facilitate learning. During the congress, Valentia also actively participated with Belén Pérez, head of the Training and Employment Service, at the opening table. Additionally, volunteers from the organization collaborated in support and welcoming tasks, and seed bombs made by participants from the La Botiga program were distributed, symbolizing how the right conditions allow for growth.
The III International Congress «Thinking about Education» was organized by the Research Group «Education with Meaning and Quality of Life» from Campus Iberus and the Mayéutica Innovative Teaching Group at the University of Zaragoza, with the collaboration of various national and international universities and institutions. The research presented in Huesca underscores Valentia’s commitment to demonstrating that individuals with intellectual disabilities play a leading role in the development of educational advances.
