The Monastery of Veruela will host a special series of thematic guided tours during the second week of July titled “Veruela, Where the Stones Speak: From the Marks of the Masters to the Eclipse of 1860”.
This guided tour offers a unique and detailed exploration of the emblematic Cistercian monastery, focusing on two fascinating aspects of its history:
1. The Marks of the Master Builders Visitors will discover the traces left in stone nearly nine centuries ago by ancient stonemasons and medieval masters: signs, symbols, and stonemason marks that reveal construction techniques, work organization, and secrets of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
2. The Solar Eclipse of 1860 The tour commemorates one of the most remarkable episodes in Veruela’s history: the total solar eclipse on July 18, 1860. This event turned the Monastery and the surrounding area of Moncayo into an international meeting point for astronomers and scientists. The monastery still retains an inscription referencing this phenomenon, serving as a starting point to explain its scientific and historical significance.
Throughout the journey through cloisters, galleries, and monastic quarters, guides will help interpret these often-overlooked details, connecting heritage, science, history, and memory.
