Grupo Familia invests over $29 Million in advanced distribution center to enhance logistics and expand international market presence in Medellín

Grupo Familia, a prominent name in the personal care and hygiene products market, is poised to inaugurate a state-of-the-art distribution center in Medellín, Colombia. This project is part of an extensive investment strategy aimed at bolstering the company’s logistical operations and expanding its footprint in international markets.

With an investment exceeding $29 million, Grupo Familia’s new distribution center in Medellín is set to become one of the most sophisticated logistics hubs in Latin America. This earmarked funding will significantly enhance the company’s capacity for managing its supply chain and improving product delivery efficiency.

The planned distribution center will work in conjunction with an existing operational plant, creating a holistic complex that merges production with distribution functionalities. This integrated approach is designed to maximize space utilization, enhance security measures, and lower operational costs through the implementation of automated systems. Notably, the automated storage system, currently operational in Cajicá, serves as a prototype for the new facility, which is engineered to handle over 17,000 pallets while employing advanced management systems such as Easy WMS and Galileo.

In addition to refining its domestic operations, Grupo Familia’s investment reflects a strategic push to amplify its export activities. Currently, the company ships products to more than 20 nations, including various countries in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Key markets for Grupo Familia’s exports include Aruba, Curacao, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, demonstrating its robust international trade engagement.

This ambitious investment arrives amidst challenging economic conditions in Colombia, characterized by high inflation rates and diminished consumer purchasing power. In response, Grupo Familia is adapting by offering more affordable products and optimizing its production and distribution frameworks to maintain competitiveness in this fluctuating market.

Founded in 1958 in Medellín by entrepreneurs John Gómez Restrepo and Mario Uribe, Grupo Familia has undergone tremendous growth. Initially dedicated to importing paper products, the company has evolved into a significant manufacturer and exporter of hygiene and cleaning products. Recent growth initiatives include expanding operations into Venezuela while continuing to innovate its product lines for evolving consumer needs.

The unveiling of the new distribution center marks an important chapter in Grupo Familia’s growth narrative, underscoring its dedication to leveraging technological advancements, improving logistical efficiency, and broadening market reach. Even amid economic hurdles, the company’s continued investment in infrastructure and innovation reinforces its status as a leading player in the personal care and hygiene sector.
