Zaragoza leads the Sustainable Transition: Awarded with the Climate Neutral Cities Seal

At a time when sustainability and the fight against climate change take center stage globally, the city of Zaragoza has reached a significant milestone by receiving the coveted European Net Zero Cities Mission seal. This recognition, awarded by the European Commission, consolidates Zaragoza as one of the cities selected to lead the transformation towards climate neutrality by 2030.

The awarding of the seal took place during the “European Green Capital 2024” event held in Valencia, where the Councilor for Finance and European Funds, Blanca Soláns, received the award on behalf of Zaragoza City Council. This recognition not only symbolizes an achievement for the city, but also boosts its position for agile and preferential access to European funds, a crucial step in financing sustainable initiatives.

Zaragoza, now one of five Spanish cities with this seal, joins the elite of cities committed to the climate cause, along with Madrid, Valencia, Valladolid and Vitoria. This achievement is not only a recognition of past efforts, but also a future commitment to reduce pollution and improve the quality of life of citizens.

The ultimate goal of this project is to place Zaragoza among the 100 climate-neutral European cities, an effort that seeks not only to reduce the carbon footprint but also to create healthier urban environments. Councilor Soláns stressed that this initiative is crucial to “improve the quality of life and reduce the risks of disease”.

Zaragoza stands out for its proactive measures in the transition to an environmentally friendly urban model. From the electrification of public transport to adherence to European directives on decarbonization, energy rehabilitation of housing and improvements in waste management, the city demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to sustainability.

The European Climate Neutral Cities Mission is not only a recognition; it is a commitment to the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda. Zaragoza thus becomes a beacon of leadership, showing the world that the transition to climate neutrality is possible and can be achieved before 2050.

This achievement also aligns with the objectives of the European Capital of Sport 2027, awarded to Zaragoza, consolidating the city as a benchmark in the integration of sustainable and sporting initiatives. The Aragonese capital is at the forefront of the energy transition, attracting investment and talent to promote innovative policies necessary for a sustainable future. Zaragoza has not only received a seal; it has taken on the responsibility of leading the way towards a greener and more sustainable future for all.
