Aragón Allocates 569 Million Euros to Boost R&D

Aragón is strengthening its scientific commitment to lead European excellence in R&D, allocating €569 million to research, which represents 1.16% of its GDP. The Director General of Science and Research, Pilar Gayán, presented the strategy to position the region as a benchmark for innovation before the Aragonese Parliament.

Aim for Scientific Leadership and Investment in R&D

Pilar Gayán highlighted the commitment of the Government of Aragón, led by Jorge Azcón, to achieve international scientific leadership. With an investment of €569 million, representing 1.16% of GDP, Aragón is moving towards a model based on knowledge and innovation. The region boasts over 8,000 professionals in R&D and nearly 5,000 active researchers, exceeding the Spanish average in business spending on research.

Gayán emphasized that the objective is not merely to survive but to lead, integrating Aragón into the European scientific landscape. The strategy focuses on coherence and continuity, aiming to transform the region into a territory of scientific excellence.

Boosting Talent and the Role of ARAID

Talent is crucial for scientific development, according to Gayán, who stressed the importance of training, attracting, and retaining researchers. The Aragonese Agency for Research and Development (ARAID) has been instrumental, securing nearly €13 million in competitive funding in 2025. Over two decades, it has financed more than 1,500 projects and generated a significant number of publications and patents.

Gayán stated that investment in talent is fundamental and assured that policies to retain and attract human capital will continue to be a priority for the Government of Aragón.

Knowledge Transfer and Connection with Businesses

Knowledge transfer to the market is another strategic pillar. With 55 projects underway valued at €5 million, over 70% of them have direct business interest. Gayán emphasized that science must connect with the productive fabric to generate wealth and highlighted the need to invest in disruptive science.

Aragón is increasing its investment in R&D, improving connections with businesses, and generating tangible results, although it faces the challenge of staying at the forefront of disruptive science.

Scientific Infrastructures, Outreach, and the Deep Science & Tech Strategy

Aragón is positioning itself as a leading scientific hub, with five Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructures (ICTS) receiving an annual investment of nearly €3 million. The recognition of the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragón as a Severo Ochoa center of excellence highlights the scientific quality of the region.

Gayán announced an increase in scientific outreach activities, ensuring that science should be present throughout society. The future of Aragonese scientific policy will focus on the Deep Science & Tech strategy, encompassing sectors such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

Pilar Gayán concluded that the commitment to science defines the model of society that Aragón aspires to be, integrating talent, transfer, and infrastructures as pillars to achieve scientific excellence in Europe.
