The Mercado Theater in Zaragoza is preparing to host the thirteenth edition of Espacio Reto, a festival that has become a benchmark of local artistic creation. From February 6 to 8, five proposals selected from 70 applications will showcase the best of emerging talent in an event that combines circus, dance, music, clowning, and stage experimentation.
A Showcase for Emerging Talent
Espacio Reto has established itself as an essential platform for highlighting the emerging artistic talent of Zaragoza. According to Javier Gracia, coordinator of the Social Circus School of Zaragoza, the festival is «a must-see event for creation,» allowing local artists to experiment with new proposals and fuse different performing arts. The Councilor for Culture, Education, and Tourism, Sara Fernández, emphasized the event’s importance as «a different, eclectic, and complementary initiative» that brings together various artistic disciplines.
The event is organized by the Social Circus School of Zaragoza, in collaboration with the Municipal Board of Performing Arts and Image (PMAEI). José María Turmo, director-manager of the PMAEI, highlighted the project’s consolidation and its commitment to local culture, emphasizing the relevance of the festival to the city’s artistic community.
Artistic Proposals and Event Management
The festival will be led by Dani and Andreu from the Seón Company, who will also present their own proposal that combines acrobatics and humor with giant balloons. Among the selected proposals are «Duality» by the Fátima Alcántara Company, a contemporary dance piece exploring the balance between reason and emotion, and «Smooth Spatial Rope» by Samuel Domingo and Cristina Abad, which offers an absurd narrative of astronauts in orbit using aerial techniques.
The «Turtle Choir» will perform the first mass act at the festival, presenting a fresh proposal that explores new ways of using voice and body. Olga Leuchtturm will fuse clowning with her experience as a dancer in «Clown and the History of Dance.» Finally, «Centripetal Inertia» will present a fusion of juggling with video projection, where the artist engages with his diabolo through a screen.
Cultural Impact and Funding
The Mercado Theater serves as a fundamental space for young artists to familiarize themselves with elements of scenic creation such as lighting, sound, costumes, and audience engagement. The proceeds from the festival tickets will be used to fund educational and social projects of the Social Circus School throughout the year.
Since its inception in 2017, Espacio Reto has been a collaborative initiative between the Social Circus School and the Board of Performing Arts and Image. The festival has since gathered play, trial, error, risk, and discovery, establishing itself as a pillar of the Aragonese scene and a driver of cultural innovation in Zaragoza.
