Fungiverso Reclaims 70 Hectares of Mycological Resources in Aragón

The Fungiverso project has made significant strides in the recovery of mycological resources in Aragón, covering a total of 70 hectares. Coordinated by the Agrifood Research and Technology Center of Aragón (CITA), this effort focuses on the sustainable conservation of the region’s mycological heritage, a resource of great ecological and economic value.

Important Recoveries in Strategic Areas

The project has achieved the recovery of mycological resources in 40 hectares of forest, distributed across locations such as Loarre, San Martín de la Virgen del Moncayo, Añón de Moncayo, Orcajo, and Mosqueruela. In addition, work has been carried out to recover wild truffle habitats in an additional 30 hectares in Mora de Rubielos. These actions underscore Aragón’s commitment to sustainability and the efficient management of its natural resources.

During the presentation of the results in Zaragoza, Manuel Blasco, Councillor for Environment and Tourism, highlighted the relevance of these initiatives for local development and environmental conservation. The event, aimed at forest managers, mayors, businesses, and sector associations, emphasized the importance of research in the conservation and sustainable use of mycological resources.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Mycological Sector

At the event, the «Setas de Origen» brand was launched, an initiative by MicoAragón aimed at promoting gastronomic products made from mushrooms of the region. This brand represents an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to develop innovative business models that leverage the potential of Aragón’s fungal heritage.

A roundtable discussion on the future of the sector brought together scientists, forestry officials, provincial deputies, and mayors, who discussed strategies to ensure the sustainable management of mycological heritage. This dialogue is crucial for aligning efforts and maximizing the positive impact of the project on the local economy.

Financial Support and Future Prospects

The Fungiverso project has been funded by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, as part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, with funds from the European Union through NextGenerationEU. With a budget of 736,801.53 euros, the project is set to be developed during 2024 and 2025, laying the groundwork for future conservation and sustainable development initiatives in the region.

These efforts not only promote environmental conservation but also generate economic opportunities for local communities, establishing Aragón as a reference in the sustainable management of natural resources.
