Zaragoza Hosts the 43rd Congress of Biomedical Engineering
Zaragoza has become the capital of Biomedical Engineering with the celebration of the 43rd Annual Congress of the Spanish Society of Biomedical Engineering. The event brings together researchers, companies, and healthcare professionals from across Spain for three days to exchange ideas and research projects in Engineering in service of medicine and biology.
The Minister of Employment, Science, and Universities, Claudia Pérez Forniés, presided over the inauguration held at the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza. The meeting has gathered nearly 300 attendees.
The inaugural ceremony featured participation from Rosa Bolea (Rector of UNIZAR), Enrique Gómez (President of the Spanish Society of Biomedical Engineering), Juan Pablo Martínez (Chair of the Organizing Committee), and Jesús Arauzo (Director of the Institute of Research in Engineering of Aragon).
Biomedical Engineering develops relevant specialties in Biomechanics, Image Processing, Telemedicine, and Surgical Robotics, aiming to improve health and quality of life for individuals.
The University of Zaragoza implemented the Biomedical Engineering degree in the 2024-2025 academic year. It is currently in its second year, with all positions filled due to high demand. Pérez Forniés emphasized that this initiative meets important social and labor demands, allowing young people from Aragon to build their life projects within the community.
The Government of Aragon has increased enrollment in other engineering programs such as Computer Science, as well as in Mathematics and Physics. Currently, 37% of UNIZAR’s academic offerings are dedicated to technological and biosanitary content, reflecting a commitment to training in strategic areas and the retention and attraction of talent.
