Teruel Revives Its Modernist Splendor from November 11 to 16

The Modernist Week of Teruel 2025 will be celebrated from November 11 to 16, featuring a wide-ranging program of cultural activities, historical reenactments, and artistic proposals. During these days, streets and squares will revive the modernist spirit that marked the social and cultural life of the capital of Teruel, paying tribute to the legacy of architect Pablo Monguió.

The event offers lectures, exhibitions, street theater, parades, and historical settings involving local residents, associations, and businesses. This year, the theme revolves around modernist commerce.

What is the origin of the Modernist Week and what is its objective?

Lorena Muñoz: “The Modernist Week began with the celebration of the centenary of modernism. The Teruel City Council, along with various entities, proposed to organize several events to commemorate that centenary, which took place in 2012, coinciding with the anniversary of the most iconic modernist façade of the city. The Bodas de Isabel Foundation organized reenactments, guided tours, and proposals centered on life in 1912. Following that success, both the participants and the City Council wanted to continue, and thus the Modernist Week was born as an annual event.”

What promotional actions does the City Council take to publicize the Modernist Week?

Eduardo Suárez: “In 2012, on the occasion of the centenary of the Caja Rural House, the City Council began promoting activities to disseminate modernism and the heritage of Teruel. Currently, a budget of around 22,523 euros is allocated for the Modernist Week, which is organized in collaboration with the Foundation. We participate in other Modernist Weeks, such as those in Barcelona and Alcoy, and in events organized by the ANEM.”

How has it evolved from the first edition to today?

L.M.: “The first edition presented a visually appealing proposal. Since then, cultural lectures and exhibitions have been consolidated along with a recreational weekend centered on period representations. Over time, the quality has improved, especially in costumes and settings, and citizen involvement has grown.”

What role does the Modernist Week play within the overall tourism strategy of Teruel?

E.S: “The Modernist Week is key to promoting modernist activity and valuing the rich modernist heritage and legacy of Teruel. From the Tourism Department, it holds special importance.”

What is the common thread of this edition?

L.M: “This year we are focusing on commerce, emphasizing establishments that were pioneers in their time.”

What activities should we not miss?

L.M: “The week offers lectures, exhibitions, and reenactments that allow visitors to get closer to Teruel of the early 20th century. The reenactments, theater performances, and parades of the weekend are essential. The most beautiful part is enjoying the period atmosphere and discovering the modernist buildings.”

What impact does this event have on tourism in Teruel?

E.S: “It is a week that attracts a specific type of tourism. It coincides with the ANEM assembly, receiving specialized audiences.”

Is there collaboration with Turismo de Aragón or Turespaña to promote this event?

E.S: “We closely collaborate with Turismo de Aragón for prominent dissemination through their channels.”

In this edition, commerce plays a leading role. How has the sector been involved?

E.S: “We work with the Local Development Unit and the Department of Commerce to promote the participation of century-old businesses. Various actions have been launched, such as the Modernist Thursdays.”

What recommendations would you give to someone visiting the Modernist Week for the first time?

L.M: “I would recommend that they immerse themselves in the atmosphere, enjoy the music of the era, the theater, the parades, and the modernist heritage of Teruel.”

Teruel and the Bodas de Isabel Foundation are part of the National Association of Modernist Entities and also of the European Modernism Route. How is this heritage transmitted during the Modernist Week?

E.S: “Guided tours are organized, and modernist spaces that are not usually open to the public are made accessible.”

L.M: “The Modernist Week hosts the ANEM assembly, allowing visits from groups from all over Spain.”
